Starting and Ending Class – Establishing the Day

A great way to begin class is establishing what day and date it is with your young learners of English. True False One way to incorporate language practice is to sing a song about the days of the week. Preview One routine for starting class is establishing the day. Let’s see if we can make some predictions about how to do that. Ask participants to vote on the answers to the questions on the slide. After they answer them, tell them they will see examples in the video of ways to establish the day. Answers: Statement 1: True Statement 2: True

Video As you watch the video segment, you may take notes on Handout 9.2 under “Establishing the Day”. Play the video.

Seven Days in a Week There’s seven days in a week, and I can say them all. Sunday, Monday, and Tuesday. Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday. Saturday is a last day, Review 1 Let’s take a minute to practice a song so we’ll remember it. Sing the song with the whole group. You may choose to go back to the video and replay the song one more time to hear the melody and/or sing along. Lead the group in singing the song, or ask if there are any singers in the group that would like to volunteer to lead the group. You may select a small group of singers to help you lead the whole group. Practice the song one or two times until everyone is comfortable. Participants may wish to write the song lyrics on their handout.

Review 2 Let’s review what we learned in the video about establishing the day. You may include any important ideas you have written on Handout 9.2. Ask participants to complete the sentences with one of the words from the word bank. You may call on a few individuals to complete a sentence or invite them to the screen to drag and drop the word to the correct line. Answers: Teachers can build a routine by having one student ask his classmates the day and date. This helps students be more active in their learning and takes the teacher away from the center of the classroom. Students get more language practice by spelling the word as it is written on the board and chanting the days of the week and the months of the year. chanting get spelling day and date bored active routine sitting quietly center
