The Design Process example for ITT Sept 2015 11/22/2018 New Grocery Bag Project

New Grocery Bag Project Problem statement Design a stronger plastic bag for carrying groceries home without the bag breaking 11/22/2018 New Grocery Bag Project

New Grocery Bag Project Design Brief The effort will concentrate on finding alternative materials for use in making the bags that must be inexpensive and recyclable 11/22/2018 New Grocery Bag Project

Investigation and research The results of our research efforts found the following: Alternative materials were available Consider making the bags of a heavier gauge Reinforce the inside of the bags 11/22/2018 New Grocery Bag Project

Alternative solutions : The results of our research efforts found the following: Alternative materials were prohibitively more expensive Some materials seemed to add an odor that the design team felt would be offensive to the consumer The best option seemed to be using a heavier gauge of the same material. 11/22/2018 New Grocery Bag Project

Choosing a solution : Using a heavier gauge was chosen since the added cost could be added to the bags as a small surcharge to the bags The notion of recycling these bags will be considered a plus for the new design New Grocery Bag Project 11/22/2018

New Grocery Bag Project Developmental Work : Efforts were focused here on finding the right balance with additional gauge weight of bag vs additional cost. The following chart displays the options: 11/22/2018 New Grocery Bag Project

Developmental Work : Gauge vs added cost Capacity Cost Note +1 mills +5 lbs +10 cents *optimal +2 mills +10 lbs +20 cents Somewhat cost prohibitive +3 mills +15 lbs +30 cents More cost prohibitive 11/22/2018 New Grocery Bag Project

Modeling and Prototyping Design team found that along with the heavier bags the handles must also be heavier Team also found that some of the cost could be recovered from advertising on the side of the more durable bags 11/22/2018 New Grocery Bag Project 11/22/2018 Cch 1 intro to renewable Energy 9 9

New Grocery Bag Project Sketch/Drawing 11/22/2018 New Grocery Bag Project 11/22/2018 Cch 1 intro to renewable Energy 10 10

Testing and Evaluating The team found that the chosen bags could carry 5 more lbs and that consumers would react positively Handles were not proving reliable with the added weight that bags were expected to carry 11/22/2018 11/22/2018 New Grocery Bag Project CH 9 - A BASIC APPROACH TO LTG DESIGN 11 11

Redesigning and Improving It was discovered that consumers were in need of a better handle on the bags The team found a heavier handle pleased the consumers and made the bags more reliable 11/22/2018 New Grocery Bag Project
