Projected Lava Flow on Venus Michael Boyce
Content Overview Why this topic? How the work was approached? Problems, there were many!! Future work Questions
Overview Venus, Earth’s Sister Planet Volcanism, Lava Production –type of lava (we are not in Kansas anymore)
Why? Why not? Has not been done before, (that I know of) Curiosity, could it be done?
The Process
Data Analysis Metadata Selection of Site Getting a Clearer picture Digitizing
Elevation Elevation - Color Slope
Elevation (color) + Slope (grey scale, at 50% transparency)
Down to Business Creating a layer for the flow channels Defining a Co-ordinate system for the layer Overlaying the new “drainage” layer and digitizing
Creating the layer
Name of the layer Type of layer Coordinate System Will be used later Might be used, if time permits
Layer Ready!
Digitizing Using the editor toolbar Start editing This enables the flow paths to be digitized directly onto the map
When the editing is enabled the tool bar becomes active
Problems Cell size => 4640.998047 m x 4640.998047 m This means that any apparent valleys are very big The eastings and westings are reversed
Future Work More digitizing Adding flow direction Converting the “drainage” into 3d
