Australia’s Humanitarian Programme Using the Internet to research, find the definitions of the following terms and write them down in your exercise books (in your own words): Onshore protection Offshore resettlement Mandatory immigration detention Explore the statistics at http://www.refugeecouncil.org.au/getfacts/statistics/aust/australias-refugee- humanitarian-program-2/ and answer the following questions: How many visas were granted under the Humanitarian Programme between 2015-2016 (in total)? How many visas were granted under the onshore component? How many visas were granted under the offshore resettlement category?

Humanitarian Programme and Human Rights Read through the ‘Key human rights and obligations’ handout (Project Space) and answer the following questions: Which human rights might be affected by Australia’s treatment of refugees and asylum seekers?
