Lesson 55 Cut, Sand, Fold: Changing Solids Day 1 SCIE_2_A_Les55Cut,Fold,Sand_MAT 2014 CFISD

Explain 1

Cutting, folding, bending, and sanding can change matter. You can fold paper. You can cut it into pieces. You can bend a paperclip. You can sand wood. Explain 2 changes the size and shape of paper changes the size and shape of paperclip changes the texture of the wood by making it smoother, it may also change the color of the wood

Chewing causes a physical change in matter. Explain 3 Chewing causes a physical change in matter. You break food into smaller pieces when you chew. Chewing changes the size and shape of the food. Chewing does not change the food into a different kind of matter.

Cutting causes a physical change in matter. Explain 4 Cutting causes a physical change in matter. Cutting and tearing are physical changes. They change the size and shape of objects. When you cut paper, you change the size and shape of the paper. It is still paper when you are done.

Sanding causes a physical change in matter. Explain 5 Sanding causes a physical change in matter. Sanding is also a physical change. You change the smoothness of wood when you sand it. Sanding does not change the wood into a different material. You still have wood.

You do not change the paper into a different kind of matter. Explain 6 You do not change the paper into a different kind of matter. You change the size and shape of the paper.

Physical Changes and Mass Explain 7 Physical Changes and Mass Record the mass of the solid before the physical change. Change the solid by cutting, folding, bending, or sanding. Record the mass of the solid after the physical change.   MASS Before Physical After Physical Change Change How did you change the cracker? cut fold bend sand Did the amount of matter change? yes no Is it still a cracker?   MASS Before Physical After Physical Change Change How did you change the clay? cut fold bend sand Did the amount of matter change? yes no Is it still a clay?   MASS Before Physical After Physical Change Change How did you change the craft stick? cut fold bend sand Did the amount of matter change? yes no Is it still a craft stick?   MASS Before Physical After Physical Change Change How did you change the crayon? cut fold bend sand Did the amount of matter change? yes no Is it still a crayon?

Lesson 55 Cut, Sand, Fold: Changing Solids Day 2

Design A Presentation Checklist Elaborate Design A Presentation Checklist Create a Presentation with your table group. Your presentation must explain how matter is changed when it is cut, folded, or sanded. It will be presented to the class with a product that is made from materials that have been cut, folded, bent, or sanded. List any items other than paper and craft sticks that you use in the chart. Place a check under the physical change that you made to your items. Answer the questions below the chart with your group.   Item Cutting Folding Bending Sanding Paper Craft Sticks Other After you cut the paper, do you still have paper? Yes No   What physical property of the paper did you change? shape size color After you sanded the wood, do you still have wood? Yes No What physical property of the wood did you change? shape size color

Cutting Sanding Folding Evaluate Use the words in the word bank to complete the chart. Tell which properties are changed by each action. The words can be used more than once. color shape size texture solid liquid Cutting Sanding Folding If you cut a piece of paper, is it still paper? Yes No Explain your answer_______________________________________________________ _______________________________________________________________________ What about the paper did you change?
