Haptic Research in Telemedical Applications Darnell R Haptic Research in Telemedical Applications Darnell R. Campbell, Sander N. Countryman, Sreerenjini Nair Ph.D., Michael Frye Ph.D.   University of the Incarnate Word Autonomous Vehicles System Lab 4301 Broadway St., BSH 319, San Antonio, Texas, 78209, United States of America E-mail: drcampbe@student.uiwtx.edu Abstract We present the experimental design of a Quanser high definition device HD2, and its feasibility of use in telemedicine/telehealth procedures such as; minimally invasive surgeries and procedures, robotic assisted therapy, and training mixed reality simulations. 1. Project journey/ Motivations One of The AVS Lab mission to maximize student research training by providing applied research opportunities and integrating laboratory experiences. The motivation behind the project came from the need of basic medical attention in underserved areas, and the need of assisting our combat medics. 2. Methodology To understand the possibility of complementing medical procedures and training with haptic and or robotic structures, we prepared a Quanser setup consisting of a 6-DOF(degree of freedom) haptic device HD2 , a 4-DOF Quanser Kinova MICO robotic arm, Quarc software, and Matlab software. 3. Acknowledgments This research was partially support by grant award Nos. W911NF-16-1-0511 and W911NF-16-1-0526 from the Air Force Office of Scientific Research. The Authors would like to acknowledge Drs. Frye and Nair for the use of the equipment at the UIW AVS Laboratory. Fig. 2 Title of Figure here Fig. 1 Title of Figure here Fig. 1 AVS Lab Haptic station.
