USING SOCIAL MEDIA TO ENHANCE HUMAN RESOURCES PRACTICES RECRUITMENT

WHAT are SOCIAL MEDIA sites? Web based services Public or semi-public profiles within a bounded system A list of users who share a connection Ways to view and traverse a list of connections and those made by others within the system.

WHY USE THEM? Growing in popularity especially with Gen Y and X An opportunity to showcase your School Increase candidate base Provides a method of referral

Research – the numbers Facebook has over 1.1 billion active monthly users and 751 million mobile users. 58% in NZ. (October 2013) 3 million+ companies have LinkedIn company pages LinkedIn is the dominant recruiting network used by 93% of recruiters (USA and Canada) More than half of these recruiters use Twitter to look for talent Twitter is the fastest growing across all social platforms (7% in NZ) Globally 19% of job seekers use mobile devices to search for jobs – 57% would like to www.zao.com

GETTING STARTED Set up an Employment Site Showcase your school – let people know who you are and what you represent Promote your Employee Value Proposition (EVP) Include videos, images etc.

SOCIAL SHARING Your staff know hundreds of people – allow them to share your jobs and recommend friends on LinkedIn, Facebook and Twitter Implement Social Sharing buttons Give employees the choice of which network they prefer to share on

facebook Make sure your profile reflects your School culture Use Facebook Graph Search to filter and refine your search Join Facebook Groups as a way of reaching appropriate candidates – Create your own groups Use career tabs to post unlimited jobs with employer branding, showcase videos etc

LINKED IN Post jobs for free in your status box to advertise that you are recruiting Forward your job posting to 1st degree connections Use LinkedIn groups to post your jobs to connect to the appropriate people Use LinkedIn to offer a referral incentive

TWITTER Twitter only allows 140 characters – similar to the Gazette Make your key points and add a link to the job page Twitter is based around hashtags so include them in your jobs e.g. #Aucklandteachingjobs Use hashtags to increase your followers as they are useful for referrals

REFERENCING TIPS Check to see if is public or private Check the names or pseudonyms used Check the skills outlined in Are the skills endorsed? Check everything either at interview or during your reference checking.
