Parallel Structure December 4, 2009 ELA8W1.d Uses appropriate structures to ensure coherence (e.g., transition elements, parallel structure).

Parallelism Takes place when compound verbs or verbals show an action happening at the same time or in the same tense. Parallelism helps to present ideas concisely while giving attention to their relationships.

Types of Parallel Structure Coordinated ideas of equal rank, connected by and, but, or, or nor. Examples: Claude enjoys swimming and dancing. Brandon likes to watch TV and to listen to music.

Types of Parallel Structure Compared ideas Examples: Jerry enjoys playing baseball more than watching baseball. Jerry likes to play baseball more than he likes to watch baseball.

Types of Parallel Structure Pair of correlative ideas that are linked with correlative conjunctions: both...and, either...or, neither...nor, and not only...but also. Examples I am not only a fan, but also a player of the game of football. I am not only the best at writing, but also speaking

Remember to put correlative conjunctions right before you write the parallel terms: CORRECT: Steve has witnessed both fire and rain. WRONG: Steve has both witnessed fire and rain
