SOIL

Why is soil important? What do we use it for? What is the Earth made up of?

Earth is made up of: 75% water 25% soil 25% 25% water water 25% 25%

The Great Plant Escape 4 things make up soil. What are they? www.urbanext.uiuc.edu/gpe/case2/c2facts1.html 4 things make up soil. What are they?

Soil is made of 4 major components: 5% 45% is rock & minerals 25% water 25% air 5% is humus 25% 45% 25% Soil is made up of solids (minerals, rocks, humus), liquids (water), and gas (air).

Soil is important to plants! Plants need solids, liquids, and gases to survive. They use the minerals (solids) for nutrients. The minerals dissolve in the water and are taken into the roots. Water is stored in some of the air spaces. Roots need air spaces in the ground to grow. Animals in the soil also need oxygen from the soil.
