A Day in the Life of a Principal

Every Day is an Education! New experiences every day New words every day - gender queer, non binary New challenges – that is why it is a great role!

Laslo Bock – Google’s Head of People Operations “successful bright people rarely experience failure, and so they don’t learn how to learn from failure.”

Learning ability is more important than IQ – Google and many other professions today look for cognitive ability – not IQ but the ability to learn – the ability to learn as you go.

Sometimes the job feels like this –because you have ultimate accountability - how you manage being the target is one of the most important aspects of leadership.

The Role – Its not what you think! Its not about curriculum, class size, finance, property, IT, budgets, performance management, assessment …. Its about who you are, your beliefs, values and principles that drive your passion and decision making

The Stakeholders Who are the stakeholders? What are they expecting of you? How are they expecting you to interact with them?

It is easy to get lost in the milieu of the day to day activity - have a higher set of principles – what are yours?

My Key Principles Moral sense of purpose Building relationships Coherence making Creating knowledge and sharing Understanding change

Good ideas come from talented people working together.

The wisdom to solve problems exists and can be discovered within each and every school community.

Design more than engineer, discover more than dictate, and decipher more than presuppose.

It’s not where you are from it’s where you are going; It’s not what you drive it’s what drives you; It’s not what you think it’s what you do; It’s not who you were it’s who you become; It’s not who you know its who you are. Michael Josephson
