Welcome to the Chemistry Summer Science Institute 2009 July 6-17, 2009

Goals of CSSI Inquire Understand important concepts in chemistry Develop science process skills Develop inquiry-based lessons Network and build science learning communities

Inquiry Observing Challenging existing understandings Being open to new ideas Experimenting and gathering evidence that supports the ideas

Some Misconceptions in Chemistry Matter can be destroyed in reactions like burning. Air isn’t matter. Hot things are heavier than cold things.

What is a Misconception? Incorrect understanding of term or process Not merely a misfact Can be taught to you or you can come to it based on your personal experience Highly resistant to change

Lesson Design – The 5 E’s Engagement Exploration Explanation Extension Evaluation

Science Process Skills - Basic Observing Measuring Classifying Communicating Inferring Predicting

Science Process Skills- Integrated Controlling Variables Defining Operationally Formulating Hypotheses Interpreting Data Experimenting Formulating Models
