Presentation transcript:

What Are Science Process Skills? The basic techniques and procedures used to carry out careful investigative science and experimentation.

Why should you learn Science Process Skills? To develop skills in the process of scientific inquiry. To develop critical thinking skills. To build your own understanding of scientific concepts and principals.

Basic Process Skills Observing Classifying Measuring Inferring Predicting Communicating Using number relationships

Observing Using the five senses to find out about objects, events, substances, their characteristics, properties, differences, similarities and changes. Observations are recorded

Penny Observations…

Draw a penny from Memory…. Don’t look at any penny you may have with you. Draw two circles using the CD’s. In 5 minutes, draw all the details you can remember on both the front and back of a penny.

What do you see?

Casual Observation Turn over your paper and put down your pencil. Look at the penny for 1-2 minutes. Without looking at the penny make any changes to your drawings you may have observed.

Scientific Observation Turn over your paper and put down your pencil again. Use the hand lens to observe your penny for 1-2 minutes. Without looking at the penny, make any new changes you have observed.

Look closer…

3,2,1… Ask three questions you have about what you observed on your penny. List two new observations you made today using a penny. Mention one difference between casual observation and scientific observation.

Homework Pick one question to research: What does FG on the penny stand for? What is the name of the building on the back? Why are there12 columns on the building? What is on the steps of the building? Where was your penny minted? How do you know? What does the Latin phrase mean?
