Body Paragraph NOTES There are 3 body paragraphs in your essay The paragraph focuses on 1 topic Each of your body paragraphs should have support from the text. ****

This is a higher level thinking skill. Why? TDA requires you to analyse (examine carefully and in detail to identify causes, key factors, possible results, compare and contrast, etc.) This is a higher level thinking skill.

The Formula for BODY PARAGRAPHS! Tell Me: The topic sentence Show Me: Use an example from the text Show Me: Use another example from the text Tell Me: What is the point you were trying to make again? ****

Another Writing Formula: MA’AM Me: Topic Sentence Author: What does the author say that supports your idea? Author: What else does the author say that supports your idea? Me: Tell me again what your idea is. ****

Highlite information that supports any topic in your thesis Finding your evidence!!! Reread the text Highlite information that supports any topic in your thesis Label a (1,2, or 3) next to the evidence ------ this tells you which topic this evidence supports! ****

Review: Write the following paragraph filling in the blanks. The purpose of a body paragraph is to show ________________ that supports your thesis. There are a total of _________ body paragraphs in our essays. They go not at the end, not at the ___________, but in the ___________ of our essay. Each one starts with a ________ ___________.

Including Evidence in your body paragraphs… “show me” “author” ****

1st: You must introduce the evidence with a sentence starter… According to the text, “…” In the text it says, “…” The author states, “…” The author of, “TITLE” writes, “…” ****

2nd: Include the evidence with a… QUOTE PARAPHRASE A quote is copied word for word Quote needs quotation marks Quote needs the page number in parenthesis A paraphrase is a section changed into your own words Paraphrase does NOT need quotation marks Paraphrase needs the page number in parenthesis In the text it says, “The team said that the sugary-drink industry seems to be fixing studies to help their own business interests” (page 1). In the text it says that the soda industry is controlling studies to help benefit their product (page 1). ****

Explaining Evidence in your body paragraphs “Tell me” “Me” ****

After you present your evidence… Explain how it relates to your topic sentence Sentence Starters -This shows that… -This proves that… This evidence reveals… As one can see… ****

Example: First, one of the problems with scientific studies is that they are paid for by biased sources. According to the text, “some scientists who do these studies are paid by the beverage industry” (page 1). The text also states that only 3 in 100 studies paid for by the beverage industry marked the trend between soda and health problems (page 1). This evidence shows that the soda companies are paying the scientists and the results lean towards favoring the unhealthy drink. Clearly there is a problem with scientific studies being biased. EXAMPLE #1: In 2 different colors, locate the “tell me’s” with 1 color and the “show me’s” with another color. Label them off to the side.

Directions: Choose a text Read the text Come up to the front and grab the 3 topic sentences that go along with your text. -Highlite topic sentence #1 with one of your crayons -Find evidence in the text that supports topic sentence #1 and highlite w/ the same color -Do this same thing for topic sentence #2 and #3. 4. Create your body paragraphs on the small piece of papers you ripped off. 5. Staple all together when finished.
