Have you ever felt pressured to fit in? “It’s too easy to have the focus on me…I want the viewer to have a relationship with the object and imagine the process.” "Gnaw" 1992 Chocolate and Lard http://www.pbs.org/art21/artists/antoni/index.html Weintraub, Linda

“This is how we experience fat in our own bodies. We can’t control it “This is how we experience fat in our own bodies. We can’t control it. But perhaps we can learn to see this too, as a beautiful gesture, the aging process as beautiful.” http://www.learn.columbia.edu/fa/htm/fa_ck_antoni_1.htm Weintraub, Linda

What do you think Antoni meant by the “absence of the cow”? "I think the startling thing for me was that I made a ghost of myself. When I’m with the piece I feel the absence, both of my body and the cow. It wasn’t necessarily something I intended for the piece, to be so ghostlike. It’s transparent...there’s nothing underneath, although the shape so articulates the figure. It’s a kind of push-pull that you feel, of such a presence of the figure. For me, the shocking thing was to realize that I’ve made a piece about the death of the cow, my own death." http://www.pbs.org/art21/artists/antoni/index.html

“Moor” details 2001 Installation "I asked my friends to give me materials to put into the rope. A lot of people gave me materials from friends who had passed away. Giving them to me to put into the rope is like giving them another life, another form. I wonder whether the viewer can uncover these stories through their experience of the object, whether these stories are somehow held in the material." http://www.pbs.org/art21/artists/antoni/index.html
What do you think is the symbolic meaning behind “touching” the horizon? "...I thought I could make a rope from materials of my life and walk it like a lifeline. So it’s kind of funny that I ended up walking the horizon that I could see from my bedroom." “Moor” 2001 Installation http://www.pbs.org/cgi-registry/mediaplayer/videoplayer.cgi?playeraddress=videoplayer.cgi;media=%2Fart21%2FJA2_video_lo.rm%2C%2Fart21%2FJA2_video_hi.rm%2C%2Fart21%2FJA2_video_lo.mov%2C%2Fart21%2FJA2_video_hi.mov%2C%2Fart21%2FJA1_video_lo.wmv%2C%2Fart21%2FJA1_video_hi.wmv;title=%22Touch%22%20tightrope%20video%20by%20Janine%20Antoni;widescreen=true;playertemplate=%2Fart21%2FTemplates%2Fart21_mp.html “Touch” 2003 Performance http://www.pbs.org/art21/artists/antoni/index.html
