Methicillin-resistant staphylococcus aureus A PowerPoint Presentation by: Alex Buga Terry McDaniel Matt Blake

Type of disease The Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus Aureus (commonly known as MRSA) is a type of bacteria resistant to treatments of methicillin and penicillin (Fig. 1). Being hard to deal with antibiotics in case of a breakthrough, this makes MRSA a hard case to deal with. Fig.1.MRSA Bacteria magnified by a scanning electron microscope. 2012. Guardian.co.uk. Web. 25 Feb 2013.

Description of the disease The MRSA is part of the Staph Bacterial Infections category. MRSA is not designed to be harmful to humans, but when in contact with open flesh wounds or blood it can cause severe damage (See Fig. 2) Commonly found inside our nostrils (easily inhaled) Fig. 2. History of the disease In 1880, Sir Alexander Ogston, a surgeon in Scotland, discovered S. aureus while performing knee surgery on one of his patients The first signs of a MRSA appeared in the late 1960 (U.S.) The lack of knowledge and use of certain antibiotics for treating S. aureus caused the development of MRSA (See Fig.3) Fig. 3. Increasing Bacterial Resistance to Major Antibiotics. 2010. Knowledge Cascade. Web. 25 Feb 2013

Symptoms of the disease Skin Infections Pustules or Boils First look like spider bites or red bumps Severe cases can have them develop on greater surfaces Swells up a great portion of skin, presenting itself as a BREAKOUT

Transmission of the disease MRSA most commonly colonizes: Nostrils Respiratory tract Opened wounds (See Fig. 4.) Urinary tract Healthy individuals may carry MRSA from a few weeks to many years People with weak immune systems are predisposed to get infected faster Fig. 4. Staphylococcus aureus. 2006. Biosynth. Web. 25 Feb 2013.

Where it originated Although MRSA has traditionally been seen as a hospital-associated infection, community acquired MRSA strains have begun to appear in recent years, notably in the United States and Australia. (See Fig. 5) Fig. 5. Estimated MRSA Hospitalizations in U.S. By Year. 2011. Indoor Restore. Web. 25 Feb 2013.

Cures / treatments MRSA often results in abscess formation that requires incision and drainage. 70% alcohol has proven to be an effective sanitizer against MRSA CONCLUSION: For any type of dermatologic problems, a doctor should be consulted immediately
