Presentation transcript:

Introduction Your introduction acts like a map for your essay’s readers. It should give necessary background information for your topic, as well as present your thesis statement (topic). A good introduction addresses the “what”: what is your essay going to discuss? Open with a hook. Your first sentence should pull the readers in, making them want to read the essay because they are fascinated and intrigued. You can use surprising facts, fun turns of phrases, similes and metaphors, and even directly question your reader Your thesis is your topic. In your thesis statement, you should not use formulas: In this essay, I will talk about how summer vacations are a great way for students to relax and enjoy the good weather. Instead of announcing your topic, simply state it: Summer vacations are a great way for students to relax and enjoy the good weather. Keep in mind that your thesis is the heart of your entire essay. The best thesis is clear and interesting. It gives the reader a reason to keep on reading.

Conclusion You should keep in mind that your conclusion is often what a reader remembers best. The conclusion should stress the importance of your thesis statement and your main ideas (without repeating word for word). End with a hook (however, do not use the same type of hook as in your introduction!!) It should give the essay a sense of completion and leave a final impression on the reader. Challenge the reader – give them something to think about.
