Symbols in A Separate Peace: World War II- coming of age for the boys of that time; transition from boyhood to manhood The Tree- “fall from innocence”; end of childhood as they know it Summer Session- Peace; rules are more relaxed, no one thinking of the war yet; childhood innocence Winter Session- War; depressing, work (shoveling snow); having to make the choice to enlist because the war is approaching their lives as they get closer to graduation Finny’s Fall- fall of innocence; unleashing of evil; end of summer session Marble Steps- symbolizes how different things look when we are older or wiser; Finny’s second fall and ultimately his death

Symbols Lord of the Flies (Honors Only) Island- Garden of Eden/paradise “Lord of the Flies”/beast- Beelzebub(devil), evil and violence that exist in all of us Conch shell- rule of law and civilization Piggy’s glasses- science and technology, mankind's power to transform and remake their environment to best suit its needs. Fire- 1: technology, 2: connection to the world around them, and 3:hope The Scar- that man, and his savage nature, destroys paradise merely by entering it. The Ocean- the unconscious, the thoughts and desires buried deep within all humans.
