THE RESPIRATORY SYSTEM Main Function: Exchanges oxygen and carbon dioxide between the blood, air & tissues.

B A D C Mind Stretcher – 1/22/17 Put the following images in order from smallest to largest. Add whether each is a tissue, cell, organ system or organ too! B A D C

Answer: B- cell, C-tissue, D- organ, A- system

Who Knows….. Two functions of the respiratory system? 1. ______________________________ 2. ______________________________

Respiratory System Functions: 1. To take in oxygen 2. To eliminate waste in the form of carbon dioxide

Human Body: Respiratory System Parts of the respiratory system include: Larynx (vocal box) Trachea Bronchi Bronchioles Lungs Alveoli

Moving Air in and Out When you inhale (breathe in), the diaphragm and rib muscles contract. When you exhale (breathe out), these muscles relax. The diaphragm pushes upwards.

Alveoli The alveoli are moist, thin-walled pockets which are the site of gas exchange. This is where the oxygen enters the bloodstream and the carbon dioxide leaves!

Respiratory System Info: Oxygen is essential to life. We use the oxygen we breathe and the food we eat to produce energy. Physical activity increases our need for energy; increasing the use of oxygen and nutrients. The body can store some of the things it needs to function. However, oxygen cannot be stored for more than a few minutes at a time. At rest the blood holds about a quart of dissolved oxygen, but it is constantly being used by the cells to produce energy during respiration. The respiratory system must work all of the time to supply enough oxygen to the body.

Ted Ed- How does breathing work? https://youtu.be/Kl4cU9sG_08

Ted Ed- What do the lungs do?

Directions: Complete Edhelper silently & turn in! (put dividers up) Read Ch. 23-4 (starts on p. 620 in book) AFTER reading…complete the Respiratory organizer provided- due by WED (start on any side!) Finished? Study OR finish your notes organizer using PPT on blog (if you haven’t already!!)

Take in oxygen and get rid of the waste Carbon Dioxide Mind Stretcher 1-23-18 Name 3 organs included in the respiratory system. What is the function of our respiratory system? Pharynx, Larynx, Trachea, Bronchi, Bronchioles, Lungs, Diaphragm, Alveoli, Nose Take in oxygen and get rid of the waste Carbon Dioxide

TedEd: How Oxygen Travels through your Body https://youtu.be/GVU_zANtroE

Respiration Diagram Directions Write your name on the top of the first sheet & on the back of the 2 & 3rd sheets 1st: Use the yellow sheet provided and write the function of each organ on your organizer (They are numbered!) 2nd: Determine which organ goes in each box & label the box. Ribs Left & Right Bronchi Bronchioles Trachea/ Windpipe Carbon dioxide Pharynx Alveoli Nostrils Left lung Oxygen Larynx/ Voice Box Right lung Alveolar sac Diaphragm Epiglottis

TedEd: How does Asthma work? https://youtu.be/PzfLDi-sL3w

Asthma Demonstration…possibly for Wed.

Let’s see how it feels to have asthma… We are going to spread out and do 15 jumping jacks…wait until I say go! Now…you are going to do 15 more, but only breathing through your mouth using a straw How does that change your ability to breathe/ perform exercise?
