Geothermal Energy 8th Grade Science

Warm-Up: Q). Why might someone prefer to use nuclear power over fossil fuels? VS.

Countries that use Geothermal Power Use your technology to find the location of the three countries assigned to your group Color in the countries on your blank map with a colored pencil. When you’re finished, send one person to the board to shade in the location of the counties on our class map. Shade in the other countries with a different color.

Think… What do you notice about the location of these counties?

Hint: Compare this map with your map

Notice anything yet?

What connection can you make to the hottest geothermal regions to this map?

That’s right! Many geothermal power plants are built near fault lines or where there is volcanic activity. These locations are good sources for the super heated water we need for steam and they are a place where the mantle is closer to the Earth’s surface.

Independent Research pt.1 Click on the following link. READ the whole page. It is not very long! Use the information on this page to help you fill in your chart. Watch the video at the bottom called “How Geothermal Energy Works” http://www.darvill.clara.net/altenerg/geotherm al.htm

Independent Research pt.2 Answer the following questions on an index card. This index card is your exit pass. (10 pts.) What turns a turbine with geothermal power? Name two things geothermal power can be used for. Why does the ______ need to be purified before it turns the turbine? What happens to the water once it is pumped down the injection well? DON’T FORGETT OT PUT YOUR FIRST AND LAST NAME ON YOUR CARD!!!!!
