Value Shading

A Value Scale is a valuable tool to help you find value in your subject matter. Our first class exercise is to create a NINE STEP Value Scale to accompany your drawing.

Notice that drawing fur is not drawing lines Notice that drawing fur is not drawing lines. Often we are drawing what is behind the lighter hairs to get them to show. It is like drawing in negative.

This artist shaded the area behind the white hairs so that they would show.

This artist did both the spaces behind the white and then added shading in between the white hairs.

More shading behind the light value hairs to get them to show

A good example of using the white pencil first for all of the light areas…then put in the darkest dark… then add mid-tones if needed.
