Shall I go for the snow in Jerusalem? Or the flowing wadis of the desert? Tough decisions should be made. Although eventually, it’s a gamble… 27 בדצמבר 2006. זהו לא יום רגיל. היום עומד לזמן שפע של פיתויים בחוץ. סוג של התלבטות. שלג בדרום הר חברון? שלג במצפה רמון? נחלים זורמים במדבר יהודה והנגב? קשה לקבל החלטות מושכלות. בסופו של דבר זה הימור...

It was four years ago when I went to see the desert flows for the first time in my life. A unique day that was concluded with a photos presentation that became alive in the Internet and changed my life. אני מהמר על הנגב, שמתברר כרטוב מתמיד. אפילו יותר מאשר ביום שבו יצאתי לראשונה לצפות בשיטפונות, בדיוק לפני ארבע שנים. 21 בדצמבר 2002. יום מיוחד שסוכם במצגת תמונות שקיבלה חיים משלה באינטרנט ושינתה את חיי.

אני מתלבט אם להצטרף לאלה הממתינים לבוא הנחשול במקומות הנגישים ברכב לצפייה, או לשדרג את המסע עם שוטטות קלה ברגל. הפעם אני בוחר בהליכה קצרה לעין ירקעם. מגיע לשיטפון שאתאמץ קצת לכבודו. Shall I join those who wait for the flash flood in accessible viewing points, or upgrade the journey with some hiking? I choose hiking. The flowing wadis deserve a little effort from me.

למרות שהיום יום רביעי, אני לא היחיד בשטח למרות שהיום יום רביעי, אני לא היחיד בשטח. נראה שלעזוב הכל באמצע השבוע ולמצוא סיבה לצאת למדבר זה כבר לא עניין למשוגעים בלבד. תחביב הצפייה בזרימות במדבר התפשט בארבע השנים האחרונות. האם זה חלק מהמגמה המוציאה יותר ויותר אנשים לשטח לטיולים ברגל ובאופניים? Although it’s Wednesday, I am not alone out there. It seems like leaving everything in the middle of the week and heading out to the desert became popular. Has chasing flash floods become part of the trend that brings so many people outdoors to hike and ride bicycles?

Those who are interested are well connected Those who are interested are well connected. The Internet and the cellular systems transfer information faster than flash floods. Watching flash floods is not something to be taken lightly. Safety precautions should be kept. One careless step, and this experience might be the last one.

South of Makhtesh Ramon, the peaks of Shimii and Livni can be seen, with the majestic Mount Arif in the horizon. מדרום למכתש בולטים השדיים של שִמְעִי ולִבְנִי תחת המעטה האפור, והרחק באופק מלך הרי הדרום – הר עריף.

And we cannot leave without building the obligatory snowman, waiting, like us, for decent weather for a trek into Makhtesh Ramon. ואי אפשר להיפרד בלי איש שלג הצופה אל הפסגה, ממתין כמונו למזג אוויר מתאים לטיול רגלי לתוככי המכתש.

Somewhere under this pond is the original “Hemet” Cistern. בדרך חזרה אנחנו מנסים למצוא את בור חמת, שהגשמים החביאו אי שם בתוך האגמון הזה.

The blossom peak is still a few weeks away, but now it’s the time of the Narcissus. שוך הסערה הוא זמן מצוין להתבונן בפריחה. לשיא הפריחה שיגיע בעקבות גשמי הברכה ייקח עוד כמה שבועות, אבל עכשיו זה בדיוק זמנם של הנרקיסים בשכונה של נחל חצץ.

This is why: המגזין "טיים" בחר כ"איש השנה של 2006" את כל ציבור האנשים שמעלים תכנים לאינטרנט. וכך המגזין מנמק את בחירתו: “…And for seizing the reins of the global media, for founding and framing the new digital democracy, for working for nothing and beating the pros at their own game, TIME's Person of the Year for 2006 is you.”

A little correction – had I been “working for nothing”, I wouldn’t bother to keep creating about 80 presentations so far, containing about 2000 photos. It is for the thousands of warm feedbacks I keep getting from spectators all over the world that I am working for. It is for the feeling that the presentations project has a real impact. Last year the project was granted an official recognition when it was selected as a winner of “Pratt” Media Award for excellence in coverage of environmental issues for the year 2004. אז יש לי תיקון קטן לנימוק. אם הייתי "עובד לחינם" לא הייתי ממשיך ליצור ולהפיץ עד כה כ-80 מצגות ובהן כ-2000 תצלומים. הסיבה שפרוייקט המצגות ממשיך להתפתח היא התגובות הבלתי פוסקות מקהל מרחבי הארץ והעולם. קהל שהקשר עמו אמצעי אך כמעט אינטימי, ובמקרים לא מעטים הפך לחברות של ממש. מתוך הבנת ההשפעה של המדיום וכדי להדגיש שהטבע והשטחים הפתוחים בארץ הם לא דבר מובן מאליו, התפתח במשך הזמן הפרוייקט לבמה להצגת סוגיות סביבתיות. בשנה שעברה זכה הפרוייקט להכרה רשמית, כאשר נבחר כזוכה בפרס "פְּרָת" לתקשורת בנושאי סביבה לשנת 2004.
