“Honor your…mother” Ephesians 6:1-3

honor “to reverence…to respect…to esteem” Goes back to about 1440 B.C. Exodus 20:12 Was not man’s idea – it was God’s idea! It was not a suggestion, it was a commandment! It was a commandment because men have never been very good at this.

Not something to be done once a year Something to be taught…instilled so that it was something done instinctively It was an attitude of respect that you were to constantly possess Done all of the time, every day, for as long as your parents lived and even beyond Ephesians 6:1; Proverbs 1:8; 23:22

“honor your father and mother” Exodus 21:15 – strikes mother…put to death “any level of maltreatment” Exodus 21:17 – curses mother – put to death Deuteronomy 27:16 – dishonor mother is cursed – by God “Divine wrath” Matthew 15:1-9 – hypocrites do not honor mothers

honor our motherS No one can overstate or should underestimate the influence that a mother has over her children John Quincy Adams –”All that I am my mother made me.” Abraham Lincoln – “All that I am or hope to be, I owe to my angel mother.” George Washington – “The greatest teacher I have ever had was my mother.”

2 timothy 1:3-5 Mentions two mothers because of the influence they had on their son/grandson Recognizes influence Timothy’s mother and grandmother had on him Timothy had a “genuine faith” because of the “genuine faith” which his grandmother had, which she instilled in her daughter and his mother Lois.

2 timothy 3:14,15 Timothy knew these things from “childhood” How? How did he learn them? Who taught him? Lois and Eunice – his grandmother and mother Mothers have such an opportunity to teach your children about Christ

Matthew 5:14 Mothers – be a “light” to your children! These are “dark times” Gang activity widespread Alcohol and drugs common False religions/occult doctrines Psychic hotlines/fortune tellers Sexual immorality condoned/encouraged Divorce widespread – values systems destroyed Pornography, weapons & bombs @ mouseclick

Matthew 5:14 Mothers – be a “light” to your children! Be a place of comfort, peace and security Let the light of God’s word be common place in your home Let it be spoken, cherished and lived out Let the light of truth, honesty, sincerity and integrity shine forth from your character Let the light of good deeds, benevolence and unselfish service shine in your life Let the light of Jesus Christ, trusted as Savior, obeyed as Lord, esteemed as Almighty God shine in all you do

Be a light for christ Never give your child a reason to not want to come home The task of being a mother is difficult Don’t complicate it all the more Don’t increase the risk of failure by neglecting time in prayer Instill a strong faith in Christ in your children IF they don’t get to heaven – they lose it all
