What social groups are included in culture? What is Culture? (pgs. 83-86) Main Idea: Culture refers to the many shared characteristics that define a group of people. What social groups are included in culture? Young & Old Your Family Ethnic Group Male & Female

What is Culture? (continued) Government Democracy Dictatorship Monarchy The government is limited and people hold the power. Is a type of unlimited government in which the leader or dictator rules the country by force. A government in which a king or queen inherits power. Monarchs at one time had unlimited power.

Vocabulary Culture: is the way of life of a group of people who share similar beliefs and customs. Ethnic group: group that shares a language, history, religion, and some physical traits. Dialect: is a local form of a language that may have a distinct vocabulary and pronunciation. Democracy: power is held by the people. Dictatorship: the leader, or dictator, rules by force. Monarchy: a government led by a king or queen who inherits power by being born into the ruling family.

Cultural Change (pgs. 86-87) Main Idea: Cultures are constantly changing and influencing each other. Identify four ways that cultures spread. Trading Migration Conquest Communication (Internet, TV, Movies) Cultural Diffusion

Reading Check Question: Describe one way that cultural diffusion takes place. Cultural diffusion takes place through countries trading with each other, people migrating from one country to another, war or conquest of foreign lands, and through communication networks like the Internet or television.

Civilizations: highly developed cultures Vocabulary Civilizations: highly developed cultures Cultural diffusion: spreading ideas, language, or customs from one culture to another. Example: Early civilizations where found in present day Iraq, Egypt, India, and China Example: Children around the world, such as students in China, anticipate each new Harry Potter book and movie. The books have been translated into 47 languages.

Regional & Global Cultures (pgs. 88-89) What is the main idea of this subsection? As different regions share culture traits, a global culture is beginning to emerge

Reading Check Question: What are culture regions? Culture regions are areas that include different countries that share similar (the same) culture traits. The United States & Canada is considered a culture region because they share things like: religion, language, and daily life.
