A Presentation by Sam, Marcelo and Gassan The Pancreas A Presentation by Sam, Marcelo and Gassan

What is the Pancreas? A long, irregularly shaped gland in vertebrates, lying behind the stomach, that secretes pancreatic juice into the duodenum; insulin and glucagon into the bloodstream. Please fill in the gaps for the definition of a pancreas on your handouts

The Pancreas Structure Please fill in the labels on your handouts!

The Different Cells Please fill in the gaps on your handout The pancreas is separated into two parts. The exocrine cells and the endocrine cells They both secrete different molecules; exocrine cells are associated with releasing enzymes while endocrine cells secrete hormones. They secrete their molecules in different ways; exocrine cells secrete substances via ducts but endocrine cells secrete them directly into the blood. Useless piece of information: Pancreas comes from the Greek pankreas (a combination of pan and kreas) which means 'all meat'

Exocrine Please fill in the gaps on your handout The ducts of the exocrine glands are called Acinar cells (plural acini). These are filled with secretary granules that secrete pancreatic juice. This contains a lot of digestive enzymes such as trypsinogen, chymotrypsinogen which are the inactive forms of trypsin and chymotrypsin. The enzyme enterokinase activates these enzymes by removing some amino acids from them. Other secreted enzymes are lipase, amylase and carboxypeptidase (also released in an inactive version, activated by pepsin). These are emptied into the duodenum via the pancreatic duct.

Endocrine Please fill in the gaps on your handout The Islets of Langerhans are the site of the endocrine actions of the pancreas. Basically, this is the secretion of the enzymes insulin and glucagon (but you already knew that. And you know what they do). Glucagon is produced by the alpha cells, insulin by the beta cells and the delta cells secrete somatostatin (this decreases levels of both of the other hormones).

THE END We hope you enjoyed the show. Thank you for watching, please exit the classroom quietly (or otherwise). PS Team Kickass had a hand in the making of this presentation.
