DBQ Writing Process

Introduction and Thesis Introduce the topic. Include some background information. Thesis: What is the question? How similar were Ancient Athens and Han China? Ancient Athens and Han China were very similar societies, as evidenced by their social, cultural, and political factors. Ancient Athens and Han China were similar socially and culturally, but were dissimilar politically. Ancient Athens and Han China were very different societies, especially when considering social, culture, and political factors.

Including Documents Cite and refer specifically to the documents in your body paragraphs to illustrate points and lend credibility to your argument. Do not simply list the documents or mention them in passing. Mention the author, then describe what is said in the document. You can either paraphrase or quote directly from the document. After paraphrasing or quoting the document, cite the document. Example: In contrast to Athens, civic participation in China was not an expectation nor a requirement. This point is perhaps best illustrated by the Chinese philosopher Confucius. Confucius states that by simply being a moral person and a good partner in one’s various relationships, they are in fact influencing the government (Document J).

Remaining items Point of View (POV) Additional Document Consider the author’s context. Use SOAPSTONE to figure out what their background is or what their bias might be. Additional Document What is missing from the documents? Remember the POV. Whose POV might be missing to make the documents more complete? Typically marginalized people’s voices might be helpful to consider.

Conclusion Wrap up your essay in a final paragraph. Do not simply restate the introduction. Synthesize your information in the conclusion and include your thesis again.
