Brazil is an enormous country and it would be wrong to think of it as all being the same. Brazil has a great variety of people. Complete the activities on p.23 of the booklet

Different Regions Central-West Region North-East Region North Region South-East Region South Region There are 26 states in Brazil Using your booklet, mark the major cities on your map.

Activity You are going to be given a region of Brazil. Your task is to design a poster advertising one of Brazil’s five regions as a holiday destination.

Questions on the Regions What is the climate of the North East region? Name two major cities. What does this region rely on to make money? Where would you find the Amazon? Write down to major cities in the South East region. Describe the industry of the South East region. Describe the industry in the South region. In what region would you find the capital?

Task Choose two regions from the table. Use the booklet to create a mind map on the two regions. Include as much information as possible.

POPULATION CLIMATE AGRICULTURE INDUSTRY NORTH 15 million (8%) High temperatures and heavy rainfall ensure Amazon Rainforest stays green. Average temperature 22-26 degrees Celsius. Some cattle rearing on former forest land. Rubber production important. Federal Government gave financial incentives for setting up industry in state of Amazonas, especially electro-electronics. EAST 49 million (26%) Hottest region. Temperature can be above 38 degrees Celsius. Not a lot of rain – difficult to grow crops. Problem of drought. Cacao, sugar cane and cotton are very important. Cattle rearing important in dry areas. Fishing becoming more important. Tourism, machinery manufacturing and textiles are important. SOUTH 79 million (42%) Along coast – average temperature 23-27 degrees Celsius. Inland, on higher ground, temperatures lower – 18-21 degrees Celsius. Rich in minerals. Advanced agriculture – coffee, sugar cane and oranges – for export and domestic consumption. Business centre of Brazil. Heavily industrialised with machine and electronic manufacturing, automobile and aviation industry, tourism etc. 29 million (16%) Semi-tropical. Cooler with distinct seasons. Can snow. Average temperature 17-19 degrees Celsius. Cattle rearing important – extended as forests been removed. Crops such as oranges, apples and grapefruits also grown. Developed in recent decades. Industries established in city of Porto Alegre like textiles. WEST CENTRAL 14 million Weather split into two. One season is dry and colder, while the other is humid and hot. Average temperature 20 degrees Celsius. Cattle rearing very important. Main supplier of beef. Soya production developing. Few modern industries. Important mineral resources – diamond and quartz.
