September 28, 2016 Simple Sentence A simple sentence has one independent clause and no subordinate clauses
Independent clause- A clause that can stand by itself as a sentence. EX: John joined the team
Subordinate clause (dependent) A subordinate clause does not express a complete thought and cannot stand alone as a sentence.
Simple Sentence Examples The sky was blue. It is raining today.
Compound sentences Compound Sentences are made up of two independent clauses. The clauses may be joined by a conjunction (and, but , or) or a semi-colon (;).
Compound examples 1. The sky was blue, but it is raining today. The independent clauses (in red)are separated by a comma and then the conjunction.
Compound examples The sky was blue; it is raining today. The independent clauses are separated by a semi-colon. (;)
