IV. League of Nations Fails

A. Japan Builds an Empire 1920s – Japan becomes more democratic Had prime minister and cabinet 1930s – Government blamed for Great Depression Military leaders won control of the country Emperor Hirohito – Becomes a figure head

B. Strike One Manchuria – (1931) Japanese army seized control of this Chinese providence First direct challenge to League of Nations

League protested Japan’s action but had no power to punish them 1935 – Japan withdraws from the League of Nations

C. Strike Two Mussolini attacks Ethiopia in 1935 Ethiopia’s army is easily defeated by the more powerful Italians Again, the League condemns the attack but does nothing

D. Strike Three Hitler defies the Treaty of Versailles 1935 – Hitler begins rebuilding Germany’s army Also sent troops to reoccupy the Rhineland – area along the German/French border

H. Appeasement Munich Conference – British Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain meets with Hitler Chamberlain agrees to give Germany the Sudetenland if Hitler would stop there
