How else shall we contain Communism? L/O: To understand the other methods used by the US to prevent the spread of Communism. War is far too expensive for us to invade every country in danger of becoming Communist! Help! What else can we do?

Method 1: Anti Communist alliances – write this as a sub heading NATO: North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (set up in 1949) SEATO: South East Asia Treaty Organisation (1955) CENTO: Central Asia Treaty Organisation (1955) The USA gave arms, money and advice to these countries to help supress Communist activities. Stalin reacted by creating the Warsaw Pact to unite all the Communist countries of Eastern Europe in an agreement to defend each other should there be a war! USE PAGE 100 Task: Name TWO countries which signed up each of these organisations!

We’re harmless because are armed! Method 2: Arms race! (again!) What? Crazy times! USA used their new atomic bomb on Japan in 1945 Both powers realised atomic bombs were the ‘future’ of strength and defence! Both powers raced to build bigger, better and more deadly weapons! They spied on each other to steal secrets The US used U2 planes, which flew too high to be shot down, to fly over Russia and take photos of their weapons. The US put nuclear missiles in Turkey pointing directly at the USSR! Both sides hade planes and submarines equipped to carry nuclear weapons!

Mutually assured defence! MAD TIMES: We’re harmless because are armed! Method 2: Arms race! (again!) - subheading So ….. Each side had enough weapons to destroy the world! The idea was that now no one would risk war as they would all die! This theory was called: The MAD theory! Mutually assured defence! Why? Both sides wanted to prove they were superior and cleverer than the other! Then the other side would not risk attacking you and your people would feel safe! What was the ‘missile gap’ myth? There was a belief in the 1950s that the Soviets had more nuclear missiles than the US. The people were terrified! But no one wanted to disprove the myth in the USSR AND the US! Krushchev liked that it made him look stronger in Russia! US army commanders could get more money from the government to make more weapons Task: Explain the reasons behind the MAD THEORY referring to the arms race between east and west!

Other methods of containing Communism? Task: Summarise what you have learnt in a venn diagram to show how all the methods of containing Communism Alliances SEATO / CENTO / WARSAW PACT Gave allies/spies in Europe and Asia Missiles could be placed in allied countries Spread of anti soviet propaganda to Europe and Asia Spying Propaganda Arms race

Genuine feeling of fear in the US in the 1950s and 60s. Drop and cover What were the consequences of these actions on the 1950s and 60s https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IKqXu-5jw60 What does this video tell us about the serious effects of the arms race in the US? How do you think people reacted? Do you think this brought more or less support for the Cold War? Discuss Fear! Genuine feeling of fear in the US in the 1950s and 60s. Would there be a nuclear war? Was this the end? People protested against the arms race Children were taught what to do if there was a nuclear attack One mistake, one over zealous leader or one small act of aggression could lead to nuclear war!
