Weather SPI 0607.8.4 Interpret meteorological data to make predictions about the weather

Objective Your learning goal today… Know the four factors affect our weather and what tools we use to measure them.

Note Page At the top of the page write the title: Weather Instructions: Any of the text written in blue should be copied into your notes.

TNReady Question

Answer D. Wind

What is Weather? Definition- the daily conditions of the Earth’s atmosphere Video Clip- Our World: What is Weather? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ut gFHHhm1xU

Check for Understanding What is the definition for weather?

Answer Definition- the daily conditions of the Earth’s atmosphere

Four Factors that Affect Weather 1. Heat- the sun’s rays strike the Earth at different angles making temperature differences on Earth 2. Air Pressure- depends on the density of the air (cold air is more dense= more pressure) 3. Wind- air pressure differences cause air movement (convection currents) 4. Moisture- Relative Humidity- condensation in the atmosphere causes clouds and rain

Check for Understanding What four factors affect our weather?

Answer Heat, Air Pressure, Wind, and Moisture affect weather.

Weather or Climate? Weather and Climate are NOT the same. Weather is the DAILY events. Climate is an AVERAGE weather for the area. Video Clip: Weather vs. Climate: Crash Course Kids https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YbA Wny7FV3w

Check for Understanding What is the difference between weather and climate?

Answer Weather is the daily events. Climate is an average weather for the area.

Four Weather Factors Make Events Each factor (Heat, Air Pressure, Wind, and Moisture) creates an event that can be measured. Temperature- hot or cold Cloudy or Rainy- moisture in the air Wind- air movement Pressure- density of air

Check for Understanding What are some weather events?

Answer Temperature, Cloudy or Rainy, Wind, and Pressure

How do we measure weather events? Draw and Label on note page: 1. Anemometer- measures wind speed

How do we measure weather? 2. Hygrometer- measures moisture (water vapor) in the air

How do we measure weather? Thermometer- measure the temperature (kinetic energy)

How do we measure weather? Barometer- measures air pressure

Check for Understanding What weather instrument measures… 1. Air Pressure? 2. Moisture? 3. Wind speed? 4. Temperature?

Answer 1. Air Pressure- barometer 2. Moisture- hygrometer 3. Wind speed- anemometer 4. Temperature- thermometer

Ticket Out the Door On a sheet of paper, answer the following questions without using notes!! 1. What is weather? 2. What four factors determine our weather? 3. What do these four factors cause? (events) 4. What do we use to measure these four factors?
