Histology: four layers: -Mucosa -epithelium: stratified squamous or simple columnar -lamina propria: areolar c.t. -muscularis mucosa: smooth muscle -Submucosa: dense irregular c.t. -Muscularis externa: skeletal muscle (upper esophagus), smooth muscle elsewhere (-oblique layer: stomach only) -circular layer -longitudinal layer -Serosa or adventitia: simple squamous epith., areolar c.t.

The Esophagus -Stratified squamous epithelium -Skeletal muscle in m. externa -Adventitia
