STUDIES IN 1 CORINTHIANS (41) Members of the One Body 1 Corinthians 12:14-26
The Body has many members (14) A Call for unity. A reminder that these brethren need each other
Every part has a function (15-17) A foot cannot refuse to be part of the body because it is not a hand (15-17) Attitude of envy - 1 Cor. 13:4, 3:3 Discontent – 1 Cor. 7:21-22, Phil. 4:11, 1 Tim. 6:6, Heb. 13:5
Every part has a function (15-17) Each function important (17) The church – many functions – no one can do them all WE NEED EACH OTHER! Eph. 4:16 Thought: What could we do with more “parts”?
God has set the members (18) It’s His choice! (18) He knows what is best and needed To whom are you complaining? Whatever our part be, it is important!
Where would the body be? (19-21) Without a body no part could function (19) There are many members, yet one body (20)
Where would the body be? (19-21) Eye cannot reject the hand (21) Superiority and arrogance Describes one ignoring the support of others
Where would the body be? (19-21) The sin of arrogance – Prov. 6:16, 16:18-19 1 Cor. 13:4-5 1 Cor. 3:18, 8:1, 10:12 The sin of selfishness – Phil. 2:3-4
Every part is necessary (22-24) Often unseen parts have the greater importance (i.e. organs, etc.) Weaker parts, “less honorable” parts, “unpresentable parts” – parts not visible, but they have an important purpose.
God honors every part (24) Greater honor to the part that lacks it. IF we use our “talents” God knows it
That there be no schism (25-26) As every part does its function, there is harmony (like an orchestra).
That there be no schism (25-26) Parts depend on each other (25) When a part is injured, other parts take up slack and “rally” to help heal. Body of Christ – one suffers, we all suffer, etc. – Rom. 12:15 We have to know each other and prefer one another
You are the body of Christ (27) Paul’s summary (and transition) (27) Together the body of Christ, individually members. Summary: God sees the little things we do. DO we???
Is this body functioning as God would have it?
