The Five Themes of Geography Location Place Interaction Movement Region 11/23/2018

Theme 1: LOCATION Exact Location: Uses latitude and longitude to find the exact location of a place. RELATIVE LOCATION: The location of a place in relation to some other places or objects. 11/23/2018

Examples of Relative Location Coxsackie is between Albany and Catskill. Albany is between Canada and New York City. 11/23/2018

Examples of Exact Location Paris, France is 48o51' North latitude and 2.20' East longitude - Florence, AL is 34o46' North latitude and 87.40' West longitude 11/23/2018

Theme 2: PLACE PHYSICAL FEATURES such as climate soil, plant life, animal life, and bodies of water. HUMAN FEATURES: such as kinds of houses people build, means of transportation, religion, and languages spoken. 11/23/2018

Theme 3: INTERACTION Interaction between people and their environment. People have had to adapt to their changing environment. For example: The first Natives came to America across the land bridge hunting for food sources. They would keep moving from place to place. Later, after the ice age, they were able to adapt to the change in the environment by growing crops. Because of this change they were able to stay in one place longer because they did not have to only rely on hunting as a food source. 11/23/2018

Theme 4:MOVEMENT Movement involves the movement of people from place to place, and the exchange of goods and ideas. Each of these groups have brought their own cultures which have helped shaped the American culture. 11/23/2018

The first Natives came to America were searching for food. Later people from all over the world came to America to escape religious persecution, in search of expressing their political views, and to escape famines. 11/23/2018

Theme 5: REGION A Region is an area of the world that has similar or unifying characteristics. A region can be described as in a physical region or can be united by common cultural characteristics. 11/23/2018
