Presentation transcript:

Germany and its Alliances In order to protect its newly formed country Germany engineered the following agreements. Dual Alliance (1879) Triple Alliance (1882) Reinsurance Treaty (1887)

Dual Alliance 1879 This treaty between Germany and Austria-Hungary. They promised to aid each other in the event of an attack by Russia. If Russia aided another power (i.e. Serbia) at war with either Germany or Austria-Hungary. This alliance, unlike others, endured until the war in 1914.

Triple Alliance 1882 Italy joined the Dual Alliance in 1882 making it a Triple Alliance. Its purpose was to isolate France. Under the provisions of this treaty, Germany and Austria-Hungary promised to assist Italy if she were attacked by France. Italy was required to lend aid to Germany or Austria-Hungary if France declared war against either.

Reinsurance Treaty 1887 Formed by Germany with Russia. This document stated that both powers would remain neutral if either were involved in a war with a third (be it offensive or defensive). Bismarck's intention was to avoid the possibility of a two-front war against both France and Russia. Germany allowed this treaty to lapse in 1890, which resulted in Russia forming an alliance with France
