A Guide to the BAC Continuing Education Certificate
CEC Scheme Hi, I’m Helen Burrell, scheme organiser for the BAC CEC scheme. This presentation will give you a brief outline of what the scheme entails and how you can benefit from using it to record all of your CPD activities in one place. Collect enough points and you’ll get a certificate which you can use as evidence of your ongoing participation in CPD. The Scheme Various activities are eligible for CEC credits Credits are recorded in your personal CEC book Collect 500 credits over a maximum of 5 years Submit your book and credits summary sheet Certificate is awarded and new book sent out
Your CEC Book A pocket sized book Issued free of charge when you enrol in the scheme Great way of recording all of your CPD activities – useful for appraisals too! Simple to fill in – you just do it yourself Several sections for recording your activities All activities must be signed for by the organiser or other authorised individual Work based activities can be signed for by your manager
Categories of recognised Activities Category 1 – Contractual activities Category 2 – Formal education Category 3 – Other educational activities Category 4 – Presentations/teaching/audit Category 5 – Other professional activities Category 6 – Other general job related activities Category 7 – Higher Education
Category 1 Employment – 20 credits each year EQA – 10 credits per EQA
Category 2 40 credits per day Claim this for formal courses attended at training centres Tutorials/slide seminars at conferences such as the BAC ASM These activities MUST be cytology related
Category 3 Claim 30 credits per day or 5 credits per hour of activity Includes activities such as in-house tutorials, journal based learning (IBMS or BAC), attendance at conferences such as BAC ASM, IBMS congress etc
Category 4 Presentations/Teaching/Audit 50 credits for primary author 25 credits for secondary author 5 credits per hour for FIRST occurrence of compiling and giving a presentation
Category 5 Other professional activities 10 credits per year This can include any professional activity that you carry out which is extra to your main role, eg health & safety officer, committee member of a cytology organisation etc
Category 6 Job related activities (not cytology) 3 credits per hour of acticity Eg other work based training such as fire safety, audit training
Category 7 Higher education such as BSc, MSc, IBMS qualifications 20 credits – NHSCSP Diploma 20 credits – Registration/Specialist portfolio 200 credits - BSc, MSc, HSD, DEP 250 credits – ASD
Target to achieve certificate 500 credits Minimum of 3 categories Maximum timescale of 5 years
To claim for your certificate Make sure all activities have been validated and signed for Fill out a credits summary sheet Post this and your CEC book to me
