1.3 The Algebraic Order of Operations Objective: Apply the algebraic order of operations. Standard Addressed: 2.2.8.A: Complete calculations by applying the order of operations.

Grouping Symbols or Inclusion Symbols Symbols like parentheses, ( ), brackets, [ ], braces, { }, and the fraction bar, –, are called grouping symbols or inclusion symbols.

Ex 1 3 – 3 Division 0 Subtraction 36 ÷ 4 • 3 Exponents 9 • 3 Division 27 Multiplication

2a. (30 + 4) ÷ 2 – 1 = 16 34 ÷ 2 – 1 =16 17 – 1 = 16 16 = 16 TRUE!!!

b. Insert grouping symbols to make 80 ÷ 2 + 6 • 5 = 50 true. 80 ÷ (2 + 6) • 5 =50 80 ÷ 8 • 5 = 50 10 • 5 = 50 50 = 50 TRUE 

Ex. 3a Perform all the multiplication

Ex. 3b The height, in feet, of a falling object dropped from a height of 1000 feet after s seconds is given by 1000 – 16s2. What is its height after 5 seconds? 1000 – 16(5)2 1000 – 400 600

Ex. 4

Ex. 5a

Ex. 5b Evaluate 3{4[5(6) – 3(2)] – 2} + 7. 3{4[ 30 – 6 ] – 2} + 7 3{4[ 24 ] – 2} + 7 3{96 – 2} + 7 3{94} + 7 282 + 7 289
