Document a: Read and ANNOTATE with your group! You should have words circled, phrases underlined, and notes/pictures in the margins. DON’T EVEN THINK ABOUT ANSWERING THE QUESTIONS UNTIL YOU HAVE READ AND ANNOTATED! Answer the following questions with your group about Document A: Describe “the house Papa talked about when he held a lottery ticket.” Why do you think he holds the lottery ticket when he describes this house? What does Esperanza mean when she says, “the house on Mango Street is not the way they told it at all”? Count the number of times the word “there” appears at the end of the story. Count how many times it is written in italics. Why is the word repeated so many times? Why are italics used? The last line of the story is, “But I know how those things go.” What does Esperanza “know”? What obstacle to reaching the American Dream is most evident in this story? Are there others?

Document b – same process Read and ANNOTATE with your group! You should have words circled, phrases underlined, and notes/pictures in the margins. DON’T EVEN THINK ABOUT ANSWERING THE QUESTIONS UNTIL YOU HAVE READ AND ANNOTATED! Answer the following questions with your group about Document B: What are some things that Esperanza’s mother can do? What are some things that Esperanza’s mother would “someday” like to do? Why do you think Esperanza’s mother doesn’t do the things she would like to do? Why did Esperanza’s mother quit school? What obstacle to reaching the American Dream is most evident in this story? Are there others?
