From the source Poor weather meant that peat could not be harvested Many Highlanders had previously been cleared from the land to make room for sheep farms. Potato famine led to starvation Small crofts could not properly support large families. Remember, you must relate each point back to the question.

From recall Scots were attracted by the prospect of higher wages in countries such as Canada and Australia. English wages were 15% higher. Steamships reduced travelling times across the Atlantic from 6 weeks to 1 week. Family members who had already emigrated wrote letters back to Scotland which described their successes. Scotland's economy depended on exports, so when global trade declined, there was mass unemployment. Colonial agents from countries such as New Zealand would give talks in Scotland which described opportunities for emigrants. Landlords and charities subsidised the passage of emigrants. Many Scots had skills that were heavily in demand abroad e.g. engineers. Remember, you must relate each point back to the question.

Timing - 1852 was at a time of economic depression in Scotland, when many people were struggling to make a living off the land, and when many chose to emigrate. Author - A journalist who would have investigated the prospects of life in Canada, and would have probably been aware of the hardships in Scotland. Purpose - useful as an example of how publications were used to inform, promote and recruit emigrants, but limited because useful as it is a biased/one sided view focusing only on the benefits of Canada. Source - Potato famine caused starvation and mass emigration. Farming was easier in Canada. Scotland had endured bad weather which caused bad harvests. The Canadian climate was better. Land shortage was an issue in Scotland, but in Canada there was a great deal of free land available.

1) Find a specific point of comparison between the sources. Task 17 The sources agree/disagree that ...... (must be precise and must be relevant to the question.). 2) Quote to prove the comparison. Source B states "....", whilst Source C claims that "...". 3) Repeat this for another 3 points. 4) Finally you must provide an overall comparison. 
 This should summarise what the sources largely agree or disagree about. Paraphrase the specific points that you have selected. You could also say if one source places more emphasis on a factor than the other. Task 17

Success Criteria I can provide 10 detailed factors which contributed towards the emigration of Scots between 1830 and 1930. I can explain each of the three steps required for evaluating the usefulness of a source. I can explain both of the steps required for comparing two sources.
