What and How are Science, Engineering, and Technology Related?
What is Engineering? The process of solving practical problems through the development or use of technology, science and math.
What is Science? Through the study of the natural world, knowledge is gained. We learn about our world through questioning, observing, experimenting, and collecting and interpreting data. This is how we gain knowledge. Engineers use this knowledge to solve problems. They innovate (create) solutions either by inventing new technologies or enhancing existing technologies.
What is Technology? This is a new product or process designed and created by engineers. New technologies are designed (created/invented) to solve a problem!! Manufacturers use the prototypes (working models of the technology) to build the new product so it can be sold
What is the relationship between science, engineering and technology? Through science one gathers data and gains knowledge Engineers use science to design their technologies Manufacturers use the designs to build the technological product Engineers can use existing technologies to design and construct (build) new technologies. Scientists can use existing technologies to investigate problems.
The Engineering Design Process How do new products get designed? Engineers use a process when designing or enhancing a solution.
The Steps of the Engineering Design Process 1. Identify a need or problem to be solved 2. Research it—gain knowledge about the subject 3. Design a solution; BRAINSTORM—create possible solutions Select the one you think is best 4. Construct a prototype (a working model) 5. Test prototype 6. Evaluate the results—Does the solution solve the problem? Do I need to redesign? 7. Redesign (tweak it)—make it better—redesign if necessary (based on the feedback) 8. Retest—Test it again until it works

TYPES OF TECHNOLOGIES communication technologies--are devices that allow humans to share ideas through drawings, written reports, pictures, and audio/visual recordings. Bioengineering technologies--mechanical devices, products, biological substances, and organisms that improve our health and contribute to bettering our daily lives.
TYPES OF TECHNOLOGIES Transportation technologies--refer to systems and devices that move goods and people from one place to another by land, air, water, or space. Materials--using the properties of chemicals, materials are created to serve a purpose. Mechanical and civil engineers, for example, can use these materials to construct other technologies. Machines and Tools--are often designed and created to help construct other technologies; they can be used to manipulate or make measurements.
Engineering Design Process Step 1 Identify the Need or Problem Step 2 Research the Need or Problem Step 3 Develop Possible Solution(s) Step 4 Select the Best Possible Solution(s) Step 5 Construct a Prototype Step 6 Test and Evaluate the Solution(s) Step 7 Communicate the Solution(s) Step 8 Redesign
Relationship between science, engineering and technology Engineers use scientific discoveries to design products and processes that meet society’s needs. Science seeks to understand the natural world, and often needs new tools to help discover the answers. Technologies (products and processes) are the result of engineered designs. They are created by technicians to solve societal needs and wants. Engineering Technology
