How to break into a Show Society OR Engaging with your Show Society

You may have been lucky and your local show or the show of your choice welcomed you with open arms. Most common if there is a family connection or an introduction. If you find the show society is a little slow to utilise your particular skills, you could try and get to know a respected member of the society who is then willing to support you.

If you are having trouble breaking through it may be helpful to put yourself in their shoes. An older exec. Of a show may have amassed a combined experience of 200+ years. It isn’t easy giving up something you may have worked your whole life to build up. It is fair for a very dedicated person, as is needed in a show society, to become very attached.

My advice to you is: Don’t give up trying My advice to you is: Don’t give up trying. The reality is the future of shows rests in the hands of the next generation. Sometimes it takes a little time for everyone to realise it. Take the time to establish a relationship by proving your worth, maybe physically lending a hand during the show. Look out for where you can be useful.

Not often will you be asked to help, at least initially, an offer of help is seldom refused. Don’t expect thanks. You may get it, although it is the nature of show societies to just get on with the job without any fuss. I know some of you may have a limited time to spend within a community and would like to achieve the most within that short time, you may have to settle for making a small contribution

Think of your involvement with a show as you would with an employer Think of your involvement with a show as you would with an employer. First you have to convince that employer you are up for the job. Then prove your worth in deeds and actions often without any recognition. Regularly negotiate your position and work your way up to a position of authority.
