The Impact of PE and Sports Funding 2016/17 Grove Academy

Our sport premium focus… All our pupils have been improving their fitness. This year has shown a vast increase in pupils fitness levels. We aim for 100% of pupils to improve their fitness next year with the introduction of more heath and fitness activities! (see slide 4) To deliver high quality PE lessons in line with the National Curriculum To improve participation in PE and physical activity levels To improve the health and fitness of all our children focusing on healthy lifestyles Increase the opportunity for children to take part in competition

What we are doing at KEY STAGE 2… KS2 PE: We have been developing and applying a broader range of skills, learning how to apply them in different ways linking them to make actions and sequences of movement. We have been communicating, collaborating and competing with each other. We have been learning how we can improve in different physical activities and sports as well as how to evaluate and recognise our own success. We have been learning to recognise healthy lifestyles.

Our health and fitness is improving!... Each term this year, pupils have been working extremely hard in improving their health and fitness. Pupils completed baseline testing, and then completed the bleep test three times over the year to indicate if their fitness scores had improved The majority of children throughout the school have improved on their current score for the bleep test. Next year we aim to take the percentage of fitness level improvements from 67% to 100% with bigger, better and more engaging health and fitness activities In order for the pupils to see what level of fitness they were working at, this temperature table was used. Pupils could use this to self assess and to see if improvements were made. Group AP1 AP2 AP3 Average % increase across year group Year 3 58% (69) 69% (82) 66% (78) 64% Year 4 40% (44) 60% (67) 64% (72) 55% Year 5 69% (79) 75% (90) 76% (92) 73% Year 6 79% (80) 80% (81) 87% (89) 82% Average % increase across the school 67%

Extra-curricular clubs 2016/17 As well as our own staff running a number of the sports clubs this year, we have also been able to promote and encourage sport through the use of external sport and dance providers. This has given the pupils a wider opportunity to participate in a variety of different activities. These have included: Dance – Angela Beardmore School of Dance Football – Port Vale Football Foundation Taekwondo – British Taekwondo

With the emphasis on physical education, sport and healthy lifestyles, this year Grove also took the opportunity for BEE active, a local sport and PE provider, to advertise and promote their sport services to our pupils and parents. Using these specialist community links we encouraged, and continue to encourage, as many young people as possible to participate in sport activities in and out of school and take control of their own health and wellbeing.

Sports events and competitions that Grove entered this year are: Grove is part of Hanley schools sport association which provides competition against other stoke schools. The variety of sports events that have been available, has encouraged pupils to experience many different competitions that are fun, enjoyable and exciting. These events have also provided the opportunity for competition to be more easily accessible for pupils. Sports events and competitions that Grove entered this year are: Year 5 and 6 football league Year 5 and 6 girls football tournament 2017 Dance extravaganza Dance showcase Town Athletics Grove’s football team won the Hanley Schools football league – not loosing a game all season!! Fantastic Achievement!

Annual Dance Extravaganza Stoke School Sport Partnership ‘Dance through the Decades Annual Dance Extravaganza As part of Stoke Schools port Partnership, we were invited to take part in the Stoke Dance Extravaganza 2017. This took part at The Victoria Hall and proved to be a great opportunity for our pupils to perform in front of a large audience and showcase their performance. In total, 35 pupils took part from Grove and worked extremely hard in the weeks leading up to their performance with guidance from Oliver and Angela Beardmore.

Bikeability Level 1: Level 2: This year 15 of our year 4 pupils completed their level 1 cyclist training and 20 of our year 5/6 pupils completed their level 2 cyclist training. These certificates not only encouraged children to be confident and enjoy riding their bike but also: Level 1: Improved confidence in mounting and dismounting their bike Start, pedal and stop with control Pedal using the correct gears Keep control of the bike whilst looking around Ride safely around pedestrians Level 2: Prepare for safe road cycling Start and finish an on road journey safely Recognise typical hazards Know where to ride on the road and do this safely Pass parked vehicles on side roads Well done to all pupils who received their level 1 or level 2 cyclist training!

Sports day 2016 Sports day was a great success this year with all pupils having the opportunity to take part in athletic events. Every child was placed into a coloured team – red, yellow, green and blue. To encourage each year group to work together, every team were mixed into across year 3 to year 6. At the end of the event all the points were added up for each colour to get our overall winner. Every child did exceptionally well, showed great team work and continuous enthusiasm throughout the whole event. Acting on feedback from both pupils and parents we hope to make next year even better!

We also did our bit for charity… In October 2016, all pupils and staff ran 1 mile each in aid of cancer research UK. As a school we fundraised before, during and after the event to raise as much money as possible for this wonderful charity. Thank you to our pupils, families, teachers and everyone else who kindly donated we raised a whopping £4694.32 for cancer research UK.

Next year we aim to… 100% of pupils maintaining or increasing their health and fitness level At least 80% of pupils taking part in extra-curricular activities (focusing on pupil premium) Continue to introduce ways in which pupils can experience and recognise healthy and active lifestyles Achieve Silver school games mark by attending more school competitions Introduce CPD for none specialist PE staff Run a change4life and active families club Use ICT to encourage self and peer feedback in PE Use ICT to help with assessment and tracking pupil progress Showcase achievements and performances from PE lessons and clubs Purchase more sports equipment to enhance the quality of PE lessons
