Quick History 1999: Digital Library Center founded 2006: UF Digital Collections begins Now: 3,078,499 pages are in UFDC Digital Preservation in the UF Libraries grows into the Digital Library Center Statewide consortium Defined standards Refined tools Made the system and made it work Digitizes to last forever (or to the best standards that can be done, it's risk management). These high standards are painful at times, but they allow the full physical files to be in digital, allowing for the best of print and the most extensibility once digital. Infrastructure is the right way (and it wasn't me who set it up, and I looked for any flaws to fix, and it's right). UF as flagship, partnerships with Florida for newspapers and with the entire Caribbean.

UFDC Print, AV, artifacts Millions+ Read, search, zoom in, map, repurpose Anyone Where: UFDC: What: we have books, reports, photos, audio, video, artifacts, museum objects, art of all kinds How much: millions plus more daily What can you do with it? read, zoom in, view on a map, search, share, data mine, repurpose What do you want to do, let me know and I’ll work on it Who can use it

Digital Library Center Digitization tools Make digital for preservation UF, State of Florida, Caribbean, World Where: DLC What: we have all digitization tools, which includes scanners, servers, cameras, software, a machete (cutting newspapers), bricks (lights), chains (lights again), levels (scanning table), vaccuum (dusty), How much: lots of everything, core staff, programmers, students, collection folks, faculty, anyone making it connect What can you do with it? What do you want to do, let me know and I’ll work on it Who can use it Why: preservation, access, extension, partnerships with Caribbean and others where everyone benefits!

Florida Digital Newspaper Library Cataloging Microfilm Yesterday’s News (NDNP) Today’s News (LSTA) UF Flagship, newspapers, preservation State Collection Replaced Microfilm so now local libraries don’t have to purchase it or maintain the equipment (budget issues, this was painful for them to try) Made more accessible, more usable, and more interesting Zooming in on old political cartoons, reading stories of the day http://www.uflib.ufl.edu/digital/collections/fdnl/ Over half a million pages Books, photos, newspapers, letters, audio, video, artifacts Oldest to present, including brand new papers now like this instead of micorfilm

Digital Library of the Caribbean Preservation Microfilm Digitization to CD Online http://www.dloc.com; Over half a million pages Multiple languages; many, many partners Equitable and benefits all (AAUW and equity) and it’s an online advocate for so many nations who’s archives would not otherwise be online or not as much because we’re all sharing tools and the benefits of that dLOC as fair = we all benefit, we all get to access the materials, copyright retained only permissions granted, full representation with interface customization, we continue our partnerships.

Beadwork Exhibit Online Access More Access Backs of masks, carved work, not displayable If not displayable, also preservation issues http://www.uflib.ufl.edu/ufdc/UFDC.aspx?dlc=yes&s=artaf&m=hbtflas

Beadwork Exhibit 20th Century Hat (mpaan) Kuba People 110 photos Displayed many ways http://www.uflib.ufl.edu/ufdc/UFDC.aspx?trace=yes&dlc=yes&s=artaf&b=UF00083065&v=00001
