The Falklands War 1982

To whom belongs the Falkland Islands? 1502 Amerigo Vespucci – first discoverer? 1522 Magellan – first discoverer? 1600 Sebald van Weert – first undisputed sighting 1690 Captain John Strong lands and claims the islands – name them Falklands 1764s French seal hunting fishermen settle on the Islands – naming them Iles Malouines The French settlement Port Louis is bought by Spain in 1764 – Puerto de la Solidad

1765 First British settlement in West Falkland. 1770 A Spanish fleet forces the British settlers to leave the islands. 1774 Spanish withdrawal from the islands. 1816 Argentina declares herself independent from Spain. In the Napoleonic wars British forces had operated in Argentina against Spain. 1820 First Argentinean claim on the Falklands. 1828 First Argentinean settlement on the Falklands. 1831 The US warship Lexington destroys the Argentinean settlement.

1833 The British establishes a colony 1855 Ca. 800 settlers 1927 Renewed Argentinean claim. 1945 UN passes the Decolonisation resolution. 1965 UN resolution 2065; says that GB and A. shall solve the Falkland dispute in negotiations “bearing in mind the interests of the islanders”. 1976 President Isabella Peron removed from power in Argentina in a military coup 1980 – 81 British government announces that her overseas interests must be considered because of economic reasons. 1981 New military junta in Argentina headed by general Galtieri. Economic problems, and a dirty war against opposition. The junta faces more and more opposition, Falklands can distract the public opinion.
