- Economic Differences: A Nation Comes Apart Write - Economic Differences: - early 1800’s the N & S - different economies - North - rocky soil & cold climate - could not rely heavily on farming - N states - turn to industry with the invention of the steam engine & factory system

- N advantage for Industry Write - swift rivers -water to power the mills & factories - natural harbors made foreign trade possible

- tobacco, corn, rice & indigo - S warmer climate & fertile soil created an agrarian (agricultural) economy Write - tobacco, corn, rice & indigo - first cash crops suitable for the climate - 1790s cotton gin created a “boom” of cotton production - became “King Cotton”

- N rise of industrial economy - lead to growth of cities Write - N rise of industrial economy - lead to growth of cities - families moved from farms to work in factories - soon realized they could no longer be self-sufficient (grow own crops).

- not enough room in cities for a farm (raise cattle, hogs & chickens) Write - nor could you grow your own food - people became interdependent - dependent on one another for various needs such as food, shelter & clothing

- coal or firewood from a dealer - ex: relied on: Write - a butcher for meat - milk from a dairy - coal or firewood from a dealer - people in N expected more from govt - police & fire protection

- S few factories & jobs to attract workers to cities Write - provided for themselves - expected little from govt - S more independent N

- different economies in N & S Regional Differences Write - different economies in N & S - political leaders in N & S states began to look at important issues & how they affected only their region - not how it affected the nation as a whole - this is called sectionalism

Write This sectional approach to national policy was evident on the issues of: - tariffs - state rights - settling the West - slavery
