A New Solution Phase Protecting Group Strategy for Alkyl Guanidines Janet A. Asper, Department of Chemistry, University of Mary Washington Fredericksburg, VA 22401-5300 We are developing a new carbamate protecting group for alkylguanidines. The polyethylene glycol (PEG) carbamate will function as a solubility tag for liquid phase organic synthesis and will be evaluated for function as an “intramolecular solvent” in microwave organic synthesis. We are synthesizing a variety of activated poly(ethylene glycol) polymers and reacting them with guanylpyrazole hydrochloride, forming our new guanidinylation reagent. The reagent will be tested with a variety of amines.
