In Smithfield, North Carolina Hog Lagoons In Smithfield, North Carolina Project by Karley, Natalia, Brad and John
What are Hog Lagoons?
What is the Situation? Duplin County contains 2.3 million hogs, whose waste is dumped into Hog Lagoons. Farmers will occasionally use the pig waste as fertilizer. 1999’s Hurricane Floyd flooded the area and spread out feces into NC’s water systems.
Type of pollution Non-Point because it is run off waste The term "nonpoint source" is defined to mean any source of water pollution that does not meet the legal definition of "point source" in section 502(14) of the Clean Water Act. That definition states: The term "point source" means any discernible, confined and discrete conveyance, including but not limited to any pipe, ditch, channel, tunnel, conduit, well, discrete fissure, container, rolling stock, concentrated animal feeding operation, or vessel or other floating craft, from which pollutants are or may be discharged. This term does not include agricultural storm water discharges and return flows from irrigated agriculture.
Impact on Local Ecosystems
Impact on Humans It smells and it’s not safe. It’s good for agriculture though, as hog feces is quite the fertilizer.
Remediation Efforts Getting rid of the hog lagoons would cost the state 5 billion dollars. So they aren't fixing it.
Legislation Towards Hog Lagoons Murphy Amendment Exempts poultry and animal operations from stricter regulations A 1991 bill prevented zoning for hog farms Another bill in 1986 eliminated sales tax all together
