ASF Outbreaks 2016/2017

Rabies Outbreaks 2016/2017 June Update SA Outbreaks of dog rabies are occurring in the Limpopo/Mpumalanga/Eastern Cape and KZN. These active areas need urgent interventions as the trends suggest increasing cases. It is possible that awareness has increased vigilance, however number of submissions for KZN/EC have not increased. Numbers reported through OVI also appear lower than last year. KZN mongoose cases have been sequenced showing clear connection to the jackal cycle, and considering species and location there is no cause for alarm. (Value of rapid sequencing) KZN and Mpumalanga while surveillance is good, canine cycles are still persistent and focal vaccinations are essential. Outbreak of Bat-eared fox rabies near Aberdeen Eastern Cape.(Circled in yellow)[Not significant threat] Jackal cycle in North West is continuing and mainly seen in bovines. Vigilance needed for possible spill over to dogs. Eastern Cape has a suspicious human cases being investigated. Yellow line divides strictly wildlife cycles in the west from Canine cycles in the east. Western Cape has an established bat eared fox cycle that continues at a low geographically defined level. Limpopo province remains a serious concern with an established broadening canine cycle. Along with Eastern Cape focal area, these should be the areas of greatest concern for the country and risk of human transmission. Surveillance is also difficult for these provinces. Free State seems to have a stable endemic wildlife cycle. Investigate possible good work being done in Lesotho as border rabies appears to have subsided. Also improved vaccinations along this border in Free State. Gauteng surveillance looks good.
