Presentation transcript:

The Five Themes of Geography Geography comes from the Greek word geographia, which means “ to describe the earth.”

What is Geography The study of the distribution and interaction of physical and human features on the earth. The study of the earth and the people who live and work on it. Geography can be divided into Physical and Cultural Geography.

Location Location -----Where is it? Location usually deals with map study and finding where things are on the earth’s surface. absolute location - is the exact place on earth where a geographic feature is found. relative location - describes a place in comparison to other places around it.

Location Latitude and longitude are often used to find absolute locations on the earth. Latitude lines run parallel to the equator. The equator is the 0 degree line for latitude. north of the equator are called north latitude lines south of the equator are south latitude.

Location

Location Longitude lines, mark the positions in the east and west hemispheres. The prime meridian is the 0 degree line for longitude. Lines of latitude and longitude form a grid system on the map or globe.

Location

Location Using the grid any location on the earth can be found. To find absolute location N or S, then E or W Example: Melbourne, Australia, is 37 degrees south latitude and 145 degrees east longitude. 37s, 145e

Place Place-----What is it like? Place includes the physical features and cultural characteristics of a location. Place is a description and may include landforms, climate, plants, animals, buildings, etc …………..

Region Region-----How and why is one area similar to another? Formal Regions often have more than one characteristic that unifies them. Examples: The Sunbelt, Latin America, East Asia, Deserts, Tropical Rainforests, etc…..

Region Functional Regions are organized around a set of interaction and connections between places. Perceptual Regions are regions in which people perceive or see, the characteristics of the region in the same way.

Human-Environment Interaction Human-Environment Interaction-----What is the relationship between humans and their environment? People learn to use the things that the environment offers them to meet their needs. People also learn to live with aspects of the environment that they cannot control, such as climate.

Movement Movement----How do people, goods , and ideas move from one location to another? Liner distance - how far across the earth something or someone travels. Time distance - the amount of time it takes for a person, an idea, or a product to travel. Psychological distance - the way people view distance.
