História Mesta Trenčín patrí spolu s Nitrou a Bratislavou k trom najstarším mestám na Slovensku, ktoré kroniky spomínajú už v 11. storočí. Jeho strategicky kľúčová poloha v blízkosti troch karpatských priesmykov na križovatke obchodných ciest z neho vždy robila významný oporný bod a správne centrum celého stredného Považia. Najstaršie archeologické nálezy dokladajú prítomnosť človeka v Trenčíne a okolí už v Praveku pred 200 000 rokmi. Staroveké osídlenie reprezentuje sídelná lokalita Maďarovskej kultúry z 2. tisícročia pred n. l. z obdobia mladšej doby bronzovej na hradnej skale a pozostatky sídliska Lužickej kultúry z neskorej doby bronzovej z prelomu 2. a 1. tisícročia pred n.l. na hradnej skale a v priľahlej časti Breziny. V rovnakej lokalite odhalil archeologický výskum i pozostatky osídlenia ľudu Púchovskej kultúry  z doby železnej. V 2. a 1. storočí tu existovalo opevnené sídelné a obchodné stredisko z obdobia neskorého Laténu, ktorého keltské obyvateľstvo udržiavalo obchodné vzťahy s Keltami na strednom Dunaji, ako o tom svedčí nález zlatej keltskej mince typu Athena Alknis a dve strieborné tetradrachmy typu Biatek bratislavských Bójov. City History Trenčín is with the Nitra and Bratislava to the three oldest cities in Slovakia, which chronicles mentioned already in the 11th century. Its key strategic location near three Carpathian passes on the crossroads of trade routes it always did a significant foothold and administrative center of the central Považie. The oldest archeological findings prove the presence of humans in Trenčín and surroundings in prehistoric times before 200 000 years ago. Ancient settlement represents the Settlement Site Maďarovskej culture of 2 millennium BC l. period from the late Bronze Age to the castle rock and the remains of settlement Lusatian culture from the late Bronze Age at the turn of the second and 1 millennium n.l. the castle rock and the adjacent parts Brezina. In the same area revealed the remains of archaeological excavations and settlement of the people Puchov Iron Age culture. In the second and 1 century there existed a fortified settlement and trading center dating from the late Late, the Celtic populations maintained business relations with the Celts in the middle Danube, as evidenced by the discovery of gold Celtic coin type Alknis Athena and two silver drachma type Biatek Bratislava fighting.

Kultúra Trenčín, v minulosti hospodárske, správne i kultúrne centrum veľkej Trenčianskej župy, patrí medzi najvyspelejšie a najkultúrnejšie mestá na Slovensku. Je centrom širokého a intenzívneho folklórneho diania, hudobného života so stáročnou tradíciou, mestom festivalov rôznych žánrov a foriem kultúry, kultúrnych pamiatok z rôznych období a vyspelého výtvarníctva.
