Old Testament Faith The Gospel in Galatians Lesson 5, July 29 Ang Pananampalataya sa Lumang Tipan
Christ redeemed us from the Old Testament Faith Key Text Galatians 3:13 ESV Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law by becoming a curse for us—for it is written, ‘Cursed is everyone who is hanged on a tree.’ ” Susing Talata.
Old Testament Faith Initial Words It was because of Abraham’s faith in God’s promises that he was counted as righteous, and that same gift of righteousness is available for anyone today who shares Abraham’s faith. The only reason we are not condemned for our mistakes is that Jesus paid the price for our sins by dying in our place. Panimulang Salita.
1. Foolish Galatians’ Faith (Galatians 3:1-5) Old Testament Faith Quick Look 1. Foolish Galatians’ Faith (Galatians 3:1-5) 2. Righteous Abraham’s Faith (Galatians 3:6, 7) 3. Our Faith in Jesus (Galatians 3:9, 13, 14) 1. Ang Pananampalataya ng mga Hangal na taga-Galacia (Galacia 3:1-5) 2. Ang Pananampalataya ng Matuwid na si Abraham (Galacia 3:6, 7) 3. Ang Pananampalataya Natin kay Jesus (Galacia 3:9, 13, 14)
does He do it by the works of the law, or by the hearing of faith?” Old Testament Faith 1. Foolish Galatians’ Faith Galatians 3:1-5 NKJV O foolish Galatians! … Are you so foolish? Having begun in the Spirit, are you now being made perfect by the flesh? … Therefore He who supplies the Spirit to you and works miracle among you, does He do it by the works of the law, or by the hearing of faith?” 1. Ang Pananampalataya ng mga Hangal na taga-Galacia. “O hangal na mga taga-Galacia! … Napakahangal ba ninyo? (Galacia 3:1-5).
1. Foolish Galatians’ Faith Turning Away Paul is saying that the Cross was such a central part of his preaching that the Galatians had, in effect, seen in their mind’s eye Christ crucified. In a sense, he’s saying that, by their actions, they are turning away from the Cross. Pagtalikod.
Why did God give the Spirit? 1. Foolish Galatians’ Faith Turning Away Paul then contrasts the current experience of the Galatians with how they first came to faith in Christ. How did they receive the Spirit? Or how did they first become Christians? Why did God give the Spirit? Was it because they did something to earn it?
1. Foolish Galatians’ Faith Turning Away Certainly not! Instead, it was because they believed the good news of what Christ had already done for them. Having begun so well, what would make them think that now they had to rely upon their own behavior?
1. Foolish Galatians Faith Not Grounded in Scripture Beginning in Galatians 3:6, Paul turns to the testimony of Scripture for the ultimate confirmation of his gospel. Paul uses the Scripture to demonstrate that Jesus is the promised Messiah (Rom. 1:2), to give instruction in Christian living (Rom. 13:8–10), and to prove the validity of his teachings (Gal. 3:8, 9).
Just as Abraham ‘believed God, Old Testament Faith 2. Righteous Abraham’s Faith Galatians 3:6, 7 NKJV Just as Abraham ‘believed God, and it was accounted for him for righteousness.’ Therefore know that only those who are of faith are sons of Abraham.” 2.
According to Paul’s metaphor, 2. Righteous Abraham’s Faith Reckoned as Righteous According to Paul’s metaphor, what is placed to our accounts is righteousness. On what basis does God count us as righteous? It was because of Abraham’s faith that God counted him as righteous. He didn’t do the things he did in order to be justified; he did them because he, already, was justified.
God does all the promising Abraham promises nothing 2. Righteous Abraham’s Faith The Gospel in the Old Testament God says to Abraham four times, “I will.” God does all the promising; Abraham promises nothing. This is the opposite of how most people try to relate to God. We usually promise we will serve Him, if only He will do something for us in return. But that is legalism. God does all the promising Abraham promises nothing Ang Ebanghelyo sa Lumang Tipan.
that the blessing of Abraham might come upon the Gentiles in Old Testament Faith 3. Our Faith in Jesus Galatians 3:9, 13, 14 NKJV Those who are of faith are blessed with believing Abraham. … Christ has redeemed us from the curse of the law, having become a curse for us… that the blessing of Abraham might come upon the Gentiles in Christ Jesus….” 3. (Galatia 3:9, 13, 14).
3. Our Faith in Jesus Redeemed From a Curse Paul is contrasting two completely different alternatives: salvation by faith and salvation by works. The covenant blessings and curses outlined in Deuteronomy 27 and 28 were straightforward. Those who obeyed were blessed, those who disobeyed were cursed.
keep the whole law That means that if a person wants 3. Our Faith in Jesus Redeemed From a Curse That means that if a person wants to rely on obedience to the law for acceptance with God, then the whole law needs to be kept. This is, of course, bad news not only for Gentiles but also for Paul’s legalistic opponents, because we “all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God” (Rom. 3:23). keep the whole law Ibig sabihin nito’y kung ang isang tao’y aasa sa pagsunod sa kautusan para matanggap ng Diyos, kung gayon ay kailangang ingatan ang buong utos.
The curse of failing to keep the law was often a death sentence. 3. Our Faith in Jesus Redeemed From a Curse Paul introduces another metaphor to explain what God has done for us in Christ. The word redeem means “to buy back.” The curse of failing to keep the law was often a death sentence. Jesus voluntarily took our curse upon Himself and suffered in our behalf the full penalty of sin.
counted a transgressor Old Testament Faith Final Words Christ...was counted a transgressor, that He might redeem us from the condem- nation of the law. The guilt of every descendant of Adam was pressing upon His heart. ... counted a transgressor The withdrawal of the divine countenance from the Saviour in this hour of supreme anguish pierced His heart with a sorrow that can never be fully understood by man.”—The Desire of Ages 753. Huling Pananalita.
